The Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival on April 21-22 at William S. Hart County Park in Newhall beckons.
This successful event has thousands of visitors each year, and this year, its 50th Anniversary, there will be no admission charge. As I have said in the past, "free" always works well to increase spectator attendance.
Civil War reenactors will again make a notable contribution this year, and the reports I have received from commanders indicate that our numbers at the event will swell.
We have been promised greatly improved signage at the event that will direct spectators to the encampment and battlefield area. This park offers the most comfortable bivouac area imaginable in Southern California, so that should be particularly enticing for many.
One concern has been how soon reenactors can depart the event. This year, reenactors who wish to do so can depart in their vehicles in a conga line at 4:30 on Sunday. I am also happy to report that, for those who have a long drive home and who need to leave immediately after the last battle, they will be able to do so in vans that will take them and their gear directly to their vehicles parked in nearby lots.
The main reenactor parking area will be at the far end of the battlefield this year for those who arrive prior to 9:00 a.m. each day, so off-site parking for the rest of us will not be necessary. Only if you arrive later than 9:00, must you take a shuttle from the event parking lots..
You can arrive after noon on Friday. Battles will take place at 12:00 and 3:00 each day. There will be no reenactor registration fee. Water and firewood will be provided in the comfortable bivouac areas. RV camping at the far end of the encampment area will be available.
A release of liability is posted on www.civilwaralliance.org. Only minors without parents present will need to bring a completed form signed by a parent to the event, however.
To get there, take I-5 to the 14 Freeway toward Palmdale/Lancaster. Exit at San Fernando Road and turn left. The street's name will change to Newhall Road, but stay on it until you get to the park's main entrance at 24151 Newhall Road. Once inside the park, bear to the left and follow the road to the encampment.
